Description
The “roseta” consists of crafting a type of needle lace, for which a pad called “pique” is used.
Rosettes have been and continue to be one of the most representative needlework crafts of the Canary Islands, with a special development in Tenerife and Lanzarote. They are direct descendants of drawn thread work and cutwork, representing the only genuinely Spanish contribution to the wide variety of lace made in the West.
Rosette work persists in Tenerife in a residual manner in Arona and Vilaflor, having disappeared in the northern area where this craft was widely practiced.
In Lanzarote, they are still made, albeit in a minority, while they have become extinct in Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria.
Rosetas were mainly used in household and church linens, but over time, their application diversified with the ingenuity of craftswomen. They also served as currency to acquire any type of product: coffee, milk, oil, etc.
During the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, they had a special development in the archipelago, becoming a cottage industry, mostly exploited by foreign commercial houses, which spread them mainly throughout Europe and America, where they became fashionable as a home craft for ladies, spreading the technique through numerous publications.
Through my continuous travels to Lanzarote, a land full of nuances and contrasts that I deeply love, I have been fascinated by the beauty and the painstaking craftsmanship of these small lace pieces, unfortunately almost extinct today.
Last summer, I had the privilege of learning the technique firsthand, thanks to my artisan friends at the Craft Center of the beautiful village of Haría, called the Valley of a Thousand Palms, who selflessly taught me and passed on their knowledge to learn to create Canarian rosettes by myself, making me feel part of their culture and the island.
Since that day, I have not stopped practicing, experimenting, and creating rosettes, feeling proud to contribute in this way to preserve this tradition with such beauty, and to extend the craftsmanship of the Canary Islands beyond the archipelago.
In my creative process, I have taken the Canarian rosette into the world of accessories, creating beautiful earrings made with 925 sterling silver hypoallergenic clasps and a small Canarian rosette, handcrafted with 100% cotton perlé thread, in a rhombus/square shape of 3x3cm.
The design, size and color can be customized according to the customer’s preference.
